Apple’s new AppStore “Small Business Program” is now open for registration
Last month, Apple announced that it will be cutting its AppStore developers commission rate by half for small businesses and developers. The Small Business Program as it is called will help “small businesses and independent developers propel their businesses forward with the next generation of groundbreaking apps on the App Store.” Well on Thursday, the company announced that eligible developers can now register for the program to benefit from the new 15% commission rate.
Mind you, not everyone is eligible to apply for this program and only developers or businesses who’ve made $1 million or less this year can sign up for the Small Business Program, which Apple says is “vast majority” of developers on the AppStore. This means if your earnings surpasses $1 million this year, Apple automatically consider you a top player on the AppStore and not eligible for the program. But if by next year you make $1 million or less on the AppStore, then you’ll be eligible to enrol for the program, but will have to wait till 2022 to benefit from the 15% commission rate.
This also applies to developers eligible to enrol now, if by next year your earnings surpasses the $1 million threshold, you’ll be automatically placed on the 30% standard commission rate, according to Apple. Lastly, developers or businesses have up until December 18th, 2020 at 6PM GMT to register, after which the program will begin January 1st, 2021. Although you’ll still be able to apply after the deadline day, but you’ll have to wait for a much longer time to enjoy the 15% commission rate. Also new developers with no proceeds can apply as well.
